Why we chose to highlight this story: About 1 in 5 children in Southwestern Pennsylvania are food insecure, per new estimates from Feeding America, according to an article in Axios by Chrissy Suttles.
In Beaver County, approximately 19.2% of children live in food-insecure households, according to 2023 data.

Gateway Rehab, a leading provider of behavioral health services for over 50 years, recently opened its 12-bed, all-gender, adolescent residential treatment program on its main campus in Center Township.
This new youth program, backed by Beaver County Behavioral Health and the Board of Commissioners of Beaver County, is in the recently renovated Tom Rutter House and serves ages 13-18.
The facility has been tailored to the unique needs of teens struggling with substance misuse and dependency. These renovations, according to Gateway, have created a welcoming, age-appropriate space that promotes healing, personal growth and substance use disorder education.
“The opening of our adolescent program is a significant milestone in our mission to expand access to compassionate, life-changing care," said James Troup, president and CEO of Gateway Rehab, in a press release. "We are deeply grateful to Beaver County Behavioral Health, the Beaver County Board of Commissioners, and the incredible team who will be leading this effort. Thanks to their support and dedication, we are poised to make a lasting impact on the lives of young people in our community.”

Memorial Day parades took place in Baden, Beaver, Beaver Falls, Conway, Ellwood City, Freedom, Hookstown, Hopewell, Monaca, and New Brighton over the weekend.

Why we chose to highlight this story: It's been 100 years of running the PIAA state track meet, which was once known as the "Grand State Championships." In 1925, there were only 10 events and 85 boys who participated, according to an article in the York Daily Record.
This year, there were 18 events and 3,068 athletes who competed during the two-day meet at Shippensburg University. Several of those athletes were Beaver County students.
